Medical
Massage
Medical
massage is a western born, anatomy and physiology based approach to soft
tissue therapy. Its components have been used for years by physical
therapists and professional massage therapists. Medical massage was
first developed in Russia in the 1930’s and improved upon in
succeeding years by western medical study and application. Medical
massage procedures are used worldwide on patients in the treatment of
numerous conditions, including use at major sporting events to assist
athletes in returning to competition as quickly as possible. Medical
massage addresses such conditions as sciatica (presenting as piriformis
syndrome and/or sciatic nerve neuralgia), carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis
& golfer’s elbow (lateral & medial epicondylitis), essential
hypertension, plantar fasciitis, shoulder impingement, thoracic outlet
syndrome, and other connective tissue problems.
Medical massage works very quickly and very efficiently. Basic techniques include a method of balancing the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, trigger point therapy (as ischemic compression), STR (soft tissue realignment, or active tissue release), PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation), along with familiar hand, forearm, and elbow massage techniques. Combined, they form an extremely effective method for treating soft tissue injuries.
What
Happens in your
Session?
First,
I take a history and find out the cause and nature of your
condition, along with an assessment of any contraindications that may
apply. Then, I use the appropriate treatment modalities for your
condition. I always maintain two-way communication with you so that I
can get feedback regarding your status.
How
long will it take
for
the treatments to take effect?
You
will often feel some relief immediately. Generally, it takes 5 or more
treatments. This
all depends on the condition being treated and the severity of the
condition. My
work changes your body’s internal structure so that your healing
process may proceed naturally in a timely fashion. I will recommend a
course of treatment, including how many visits you should plan, at our
first meeting.
